      Nano-Material Convergence 2030 Project Selected as the First Case of Preferential Treatment

      Nano-material fusion R&D project, which is worth $574 million (700 billion KRW) and is expected to be implemented in 2021, will receive additional points in the preliminary feasibility study. It is the first case of preferential treatment since the announcement of material, parts, and equipment measures and it was recognized for its impact of substitution of imports and high impact on job creation.
      The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) held the 4th Special Committee on Materials, Components and Equipment Technology and selected “Nano-Material Convergence 2030 Project” and “Steel Industry Re-Leap Technology Development Project” as preferential projects. This is the first selection for preferential treatment since the announcement of the “R&D Investment and Innovation Countermeasures”.
      The deputy general manager can select a preferential treatment business after deliberation to improve the competitive edge of materials, parts, and equipment. Two projects above will receive additional points (between 1 and 9 points) when evaluating political feasibility during the preliminary feasibility study process.
      Nano-Material Convergence 2030’s goal is to solve industrial issues and secure fundamental technologies through collaboration between ministries and public-private organizations. The project is going to take place from 2021 to 2030.

      Collaboration and commercialization are keys such as pursuing commercialization by matching corporate demands with nano-material technologies (single intellectual property (IP)) possessed by the public sector. If successful, the effect of substitution of income and securing of IP are expected to be great. The MSIT estimated that sales of $1.23 billion (1.5 trillion KRW) and creation of 1,500 jobs would occur during the project period.
      It has been recognized that the Steel Industry Re-Leap Technology Development Project is an effective project to equip mainly small and medium-sized businesses with the production of high-specification and multi-volume small-volume production materials.
      The deputy general manager also deliberated and decided on the “material research data platform construction plan” for data-based material research innovation. The goal is to create a data research innovation ecosystem based on data and build a platform for gathering, managing, sharing, and utilizing research data across all materials. Contents include data collection and management technology by application fields, data-based new material research and design technology development, and data science-based next-generation material manpower training.
      “We need to establish a virtuous cycle research system in which research data accumulated in the material field through research data platform leads to enhancement and commercialization of follow-up research.” said Kim Seong-soo who is the head of Science and Technology Innovation Division. “It will be an opportunity to activate data-based research platform.”
